Can changing how we write our job descriptions really help open up employment opportunities for people with disabilities and consequently change and diversify the profile of our workforce?
Yes! How we approach job descriptions and how accessible HR and Recruitment are could be so much better.
Simple Language is Accessible and Inclusive!
Sadly it’s common for job descriptions to be no more than a copy paste job from the job specifications – full of jargon, acronyms, confusing terms or complicated language.
They should be in an understandable and straightforward language that anyone can follow!
The average reading age is 9 years old while job descriptions often read like someone trying to use a thesaurus and impress potential applicants with their language skills – this just isn’t accessible or inclusive.
Think of a 60-second pitch or explaining the job role to a friend or even a 9-year-old! Don’t bore people with the details, jargon or irrelevant points. Keep it simple and use bullet points to keep the desired skills and history as clean to read a possible.
Keeping the descriptions simple will help you:
cut down on unsuitable applicants
help less confident applicants of all backgrounds
encourage people who are not native speakers to apply
help autistic or neurodiverse applicants understand the role better
But most importantly these small changes can help businesses receive a more diverse and inclusive workplace
In addition to Simple Language using inclusive language is also essential – but it’s not as difficult as you might think.
For instance saying things like:
- accessible role
- step-free access
- flexible working hours
- remote working options available
Could all potentially open up your job description to an untapped pool of employees.
